The Witches of Vegas

Author: Mark Rosendorf

My Rating: 3 of 5 stars

My Review: Thank you to Booktasters from twitter for a review copy in exchange for an honest review. The Witches of Vegas is fantasy revolving around magical show. I love the intricate details given by the Mark Rosendorf! Isis Rivera, a homeschooled teenager, with tremendous power seeks freedom and love when she meets Zack from her rival magician clan. I loved plot and the pace however I did wish to see more about the characters involved. Our Antagonist, Valeria was really an intriguing villain. I do recommend this book if you are looking to be immersed by a magical world!

Pandora’s Succession by Russell Brooks

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

My Review:
Pandora’s Succession was an exhilarating read. Russel Brook blew my mind with his action packed, thrilling and detailed writing. Ridley Fox, our protoganist is hunting The Arms of Ares, a terrorist group responsible for the death of his FiancΓ©e. The varied pace of the story was astonishingly great. I loved every characters and their detail but I’m was a fan of Fox… He did grow on me though, as the story progressed. The plot might seemed to be a clichΓ© theme yet the author has brilliantly orchestrated it into his own style and I enjoyed that… However, the world building and the romance was not upto my expectations… I’d rate this a 4 star and recommend it to all fans of thrillers and I’d advise you to be prepared for a wild ride. Thank you to the author for providing me with a digital copy for an honest review.

Unsavory Delicacies by Russell Brooks

My Rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5.

My Review:
I was so happy to pick Unsavory Delicacies after loving Russel Brooks previous installation. I’m not much a fan of short stories but the author has great way of Piquing my interest. CrΓ¨me BrΓ»lΓ©e and To the Last Bite were epic! I couldn’t say the same for Shashlyk and Morezhenoe. These stories were enough to appease my appetite for my new found interest in thriller. Thanks to the author for the providing me with digital copy for an honest review in return. The blurb of these short stories are beautifully written and that cover is amazing.
In Crème Brûlée, Monique Beauvais is a rogue spy who meets up with a software engineer for weapon in exchange for money. I loved her character so much but the ending was predictable.
To the Last Bite was my most favourite of the three. A food critic who had closed many restaurents is about to be suprised and I promise that you will be too. It managed to suprise me and mislead me to conclusions of my own. I enjoyed the twists and turns.
Shashlyk and Morezhenoe has been cleverly named yet this did not entice me as much as the others had managed to but I was happy to get more about Ridley Fox. He is an unique character. He sets out with a team against a Russian’s criminal families.
Russel Brooks is an amazing author with a powerful imagination and please heed his warning and do not eat while reading this book. You will thank me later and never anger a chef😭(lol). I’d rate it a 3 star and am looking forward to the next book in this triology.

The Demeter Code by Russell Brooks

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

My Review:
Yes! Ridley Fox is backkkkk! The Demeter Code is gripping tale and it’s my top most favourite in the whole series. Ridley Fox and Nita Parris are a pair to envy. I wish this trilogy is made into a movie🀩. Pandora’s Succession was a great book and I’m so glad to back in this world. The world building has drastically improved and Russel has a way of writing action packed scenes that relays crystal clear visualizations. The Demeter Code is a feast I’d be glad to devour it agian. It’s the perfect thriller, I highly recommend this series and I’d rate it 4 stars. Thank you to the author for providing a digital copy for an honest review. It saddens me to say goodbye to these series and I’ll be happy to pick up his works again.

Chill Run by Russell Brooks

My Rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5.

My Review:
Chill Run was quite contradictory to the the Ridley Fox & Nita Parris trilogy. This story had a rocky start wherein Eddie Barrow decides to pull off a publicity stunt to get his book deal by NYC publishers. Some parts of this novel were daunting but the story seemed to pick off after the beginning. It was an entertaining tale with amazing characters but the plot was not upto my expectations. Overall, a fun spin off and a plausible ending which I’d rate 3 stars. Thank you to the author for proving a digital copy for this book in return for an honest review.

About the Author:

Russell Brooks

Goodreads AuthorFollowing81 followersRussell Brooks is the author of the thrillers, Pandora’s Succession, Unsavory Delicacies, Chill Run, and The Demeter Code.

Russell has been compared to a young Robert Ludlum in the way that he wrote Pandora’s Succession and Unsavory Delicacies.

After having read an excerpt of Chill Run, here’s what one British reader had to say:

“If you like Elmore Leonard, you will love ‘Chill Run’. Its snappy dialogue evokes ‘Rum Punch’ (filmed as Jackie Brown) and ‘Get Shorty’, and the plot carries the same tonal qualities of the Donald E Westlake thriller ‘The Hunter’ (filmed as Payback). As ever with Brooks, you can expect meticulous plotting and surprising twists. And, as with ‘Pandora’s Succession’ and ‘Unsavory Delicacies,’ the end will have you going straight back to the beginning to ride the rollercoaster again.” –www.fringescientist.com.

Russell is also former Indiana Hoosier Track Champion and Canadian Track Team member in the 100 and 200 metres. He has written several essays on his blog The Big Picture, one of which was published in the online Op-Ed section of the National Post in early 2009. Death’s Kiss

Author: Regie Khemvisay

Published Date: November 11, 2018

Book Description:

New Year’s Eve 2054

A virus, later named the BlackJack, struck and killed 3/4 of the world’s population. Only those who were 21 and younger were not infected. Treaties broke off. Countries severed connection to the outside world. And the country of Yliria built its own invisible walls.

Thirty-eight years later… Yliria is now at peace. But nothing is gained without sacrifices.

Yuri’s life was perfect. Family. School. Career. Then there’s Ryoma. Her one true love. Nothing could go wrong when she has everything planned out. But on the night of their anniversary, it did not end with a kiss. Ripped from their normal lives, both Yuri and Ryoma woke up from a dream to face the real nightmares. As a punishment for their parents’ treason, they must serve the government–the System–as the new Aces of the Court Department, assigned to oversee and maintain peace and balance during the weekly Shuffle.

ONE WEEK. 13 LIVES. Armed, not with a weapon, but the same virus that destroyed the world. The Aces must escape their new fate. If not, the only path left in their future is the one covered in blood.

My Review:
I recieved a review copy from the author via Booktasters for an honest review in return. Death’s kiss by Regie Khemvisay, a dystopian novel, captured my attention from the very start. It all began with a virus named Blackjack, that had wiped everyone above the age of 21. Currently, Yliria has a new government that follows the Joker system, which I found to be really fascinating! While Yuri and Ryoma were out for Dinner, little would they know that their lives were about to change. Death’s Kiss had an amazing beginning with a cute couple and great dynamic to the surroundings. I really admired the author’s writing skills. The story progressed at a great pace. In the first few chapters, I thought this would be a romance novel where it would focus two people and nothing else but I am an Idiot and this book was Cheff’s kiss😘.

Angel of death will come hither
With a kiss, your life was coveted
And death will be yours, forever

I was completely in love with the charecters and the world building. They were eminently realistic and chaotic. As for the plot, it was fathomless and I gladly drowned in it, page after page, word after word. On the context of predictability, I couldn’t foretell what was about to happen, mostly due to the fact that I was completly immersed in the story to have had forseen anything.

“Curiosity reaps knowledge, but it can also mean death.”

In a world like Yliria, a government such as theirs had managed to terrify me completely. The only problem was the abundant Love triangles and the execution of the numerous twists and turns. The plot twists were excellent yet I found it but tedious. In conclusion, I’d rate this a 4 stars for the plot, amazing characters, world building and pace. This remains my most favourite read for december 2020 and I highly recommend this book. Moreover the ending has to be appreciated as it was flawless and one of the most authentic one to a dystopian novel ever.

Life is valuable. Death is a necessity.

This quote had a resonating impact at the end, that I wouldn’t dare to spoil it for the world. The author has put so much thought into this book and the conceptualization was ideal in every aspect.

Dakota and the American Dream

Dakota and the American Dream

Dakota and the American Dream by Sameer Garach

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My Review:
Dakota and the American Dream was an enjoyable read with a great meaning to it. Sameer Garach holds a great skill for satirical writing matched with an uparalleled sense of humor. The story starts with Dakota, a 10 year old boy who follows a squirrel into the world of Corporate America, mirroring the conception of Alice in Wonderland.

β€œSanta’s not real,” Dakota answered, very beat. β€œHow can a fat guy visit so many houses in one night? With flying reindeer? It just is not possible,” he thought.

(lol, sorry Santa!) I loved Dakota and his persona was unique and he faces the world with an unwavering resolve. The pace was quick and likeable and the world building was splendid. The narrative and the plot of the story will leave you aching for more. It was realistic and every aspects of criticism you face in a world such as ours, was meticulously depicted. I had a good laugh throughout the book but the message behind every word was resonating which made me realise the flaws that exists in our system.

“The bee only wanted to hear what he wanted to hear.”

An apt, thought provoking novel for both kids and adults but it might not be for everyone. I’d rate it a four star and I do highly recommend this if you are looking for a mind boggling satire. Thank you Sameer Garach for providing me with a copy for an honest review!

“It only takes one bad experience to generalize a whole group.”

Godsgrave

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

My Review:
Godsgrave is the sequel to Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. I loved Nevernight soooo much and with the 4 star that I have given for Godsgrave, sums up that I freaking loved this too. First off, this book took a turn from, sneaky, cool assassins to bloody gladiators. Truth told, I was sceptical at first. But my love for Mia is just so immense that I really enjoyed this. Jay Kristoff has the knack to pull off anything.

β€œYOUR TRUTH LIES BURIED IN THE GRAVE. AND YET YOU PAINT YOUR HANDS IN RED FOR THEM, WHEN YOU SHOULD BE PAINTING THE SKIES BLACK.”

Godsgrave starts with Mia selling herself as a slave to be sold off to the gladiators! Mia’s journey through this book is extraordinary. All the chatecters are incredible, especially Sid. Furian and Leona are so complex and well written.

β€œDeath is the only promise we all keep.”

This book had me question Mia’s actions and morality. Some parts were really dark and uncomfortable. (view spoiler)[ How could a person who couldn’t kill a child to become a blade betray her friends? But Thank god! That is just the way of Mr. Kristoff’s way of giving us a heart attack for the nth time! (hide spoiler)] The fight scenes are epic and to live for. The only thing I found odd was Mia’s relationship with __. There was not much chemistry between them and the fact that it happened so quick wasn’t helping much either. (view spoiler)[ Mia thinks that she has to choose for herself and that someome is Ash, thats okay, but it happened too fast. Maybe the emotions were running high?(I don’t know!) But the sex scenes were cringey tho. (hide spoiler)] The back and forth between flashbacks and the current scenarios were brilliantly comprised.

“I’ve felt your hand at work. Like some shadow puppeteer ever pulling the strings, and we, the marionettes.”

To summarise, the ending left me reeling with shock and dozens of questions. The ending is just mind blowing.

❌SPOILERS❌
1. I love Eclipse and Mr. Kindly’s constant banter.
2. What bothered me was, when Mia kills, doesn’t she think that she might create a dozen other Mia in the process that some children might become orphans. In Nevernight, Mr. Kristoff drops a bomb that Mia was responsible for the massacre during the truedark. Like Tric says, her vengeance blinds her and it scared me with how ease she kills.
3. I liked Jess, thank you for killing her too AshlinπŸ˜‘!
4. Thank god! Jonnen is alive.
5. Why can’t this Scaeva guy just die. He is Mia’s father!!!!!!! WTFFFFF!!! Thats so messed up.
6. Mercurio is the best and Solis can go to hell!
7. I miss Don Tric😒 and i feel sad for Maggot too.

β€œFaith never kept a drowning man from sinking.”
